The biggest surprise was not the plumbing or the wiring. It was the sudden realization that our tiny 8 by 10 foot kitchen also functioned as our only mudroom, pantry, and breakfast nook. Every surface held something. The countertop held a toaster, a kettle, a knife block, and three jars of dried beans. The floor held a shoe rack and a recycling bin. The walls held hooks for coats and bags. To carve out usable prep space we had to ruthlessly edit. We removed the upper cabinets entirely and installed open shelving at a height that forced me to stand on my toes. We reclaimed one whole corner for a rolling cart that could tuck away when the door to the back porch needed to swing open.

The cabinet refacing looked good on paper but in practice the cheap particleboard doors warped within a month. We had to order solid maple replacements custom-cut. That cost us three weeks and seven hundred dollars. My advice is to never economize on the boxes. Spend the money on dovetail joinery and soft-closing hinges. They will outlast your marriage. The shelving we installed for spices turned out to be too shallow for standard jars. The jars fell off the back edge every time someone opened the refrigerator door. We fixed that with a thin wooden lip. These are the details that kill. A kitchen renovation is a long sequence of small humiliations followed by small victories.

One problem we did not anticipate was where to put the temporary kitchen during construction. We set up a hot plate on the dining table and filled a plastic tub with ice for perishables. That worked for about four days. Then we surrendered and ate takeout from the same four restaurants every night for two weeks. Our digestive systems did not thank us. Our budget took a hit too. If I were doing this again I would rent a dorm fridge and store it in the living room. I would also pack away every dish I could not live without and label the boxes by room. I did not do that and I spent four hours digging through unmarked boxes looking for a single colander.

The countertops we chose were quartz with a subtle veining meant to mimic Carrara marble. The installer dropped the first slab as he carried it through the front door. The crack ran diagonally across the entire piece. He apologized and ordered a replacement. It took twelve days. The second slab arrived with a chip on the corner. He patched it with resin and I only see the repair when the morning light hits at the right angle. By that point I was too exhausted to care. I have learned that a kitchen renovation will test your patience harder than any other home project. It is intimate. You touch every surface every single day.

We needed a place for friends to crash during the chaos so we turned our home office into a guest room. We bought a small sofa bed with a click-clack mechanism that folds into a deep seating position and then flattens into a sleeping surface. The mechanism is metal and heavy. It requires a firm push to lock into place. The pull-out sofa underneath holds a thin mattress that is fine for a weekend but stiff by night three. I replaced the factory foam with a 16 cm foam mattress cut to size from a local supplier. That single swap transformed the comfort level. The velvet upholstery we chose in a muted charcoal hides spills and cat hair better than any light-colored fabric could.

When we finally installed the new kitchen sink a deep farmhouse model with a gooseneck faucet I stood at the window and washed dishes for forty minutes just to celebrate. That was the moment the space felt like ours. The cabinets we had agonized over the pulls we had debated for hours the backsplash tile we had laid ourselves with crooked grout lines. They all melted into the background. What remained was a room that worked. The drawers opened without sticking. The trash can slid out from under the sink on a track. The spice jars finally stayed put behind that wooden lip.

The guest room detail turned out to be a lifesaver longer than we expected. Our temporary kitchen lingered for months after the construction finished because we kept finding small things to fix. A leaking valve under the sink. A crooked outlet cover. A shelf bracket that had been installed upside down. Every time we invited someone over we pointed them toward the click-clack sofa bed and warned them about the delivery truck that parks outside the bedroom window at 5 am. The bed with storage underneath held extra blankets and a spare pillow. The slatted frame supported the 16 cm foam mattress without sagging. I know this because I slept on it myself during the final week of tile grouting.

A kitchen renovation is never just a kitchen renovation. It is a negotiation between what you want and what your house will allow. Our pipes were original galvanized steel. Our joists had been notched by a previous owner for wiring that no longer existed. Every time we solved one problem we uncovered two more. The reward is not the finished room. The reward is the moment you stop noticing the cabinet handles and start making soup. We made soup last night. The broth was clear. The carrots were cut even. The faucet did not drip. That was enough.
